MArch 24, 2020 Health Update

Posted by Dr. Steve Buuck on Mar 31, 2020 12:44:01 PM

"So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."
Isaiah 41:10

Good afternoon, Faith Family.

We just finished Day 5 of remote learning.  Hopefully your family is settling in to the “new normal” for the time being.  From what I’m hearing from families and school administrators, most students are doing well online and are attending all of their Zoom meetings with their teachers.  My sincere thanks to our students, parents/guardians, administrators, counselors, staff, and faculty for your resiliency and adaptability during this unique period in our world’s history.

Several items of note:
  1. Governor Sisolak and Nevada Department of Education State Superintendent Ebert have declared that schools are to remain closed until April 16, 2020 so as today, we look forward to seeing our students return on Thursday, April 16, 2020.  We continue to monitor this and will keep you updated if this return date changes.
  2. We recently submitted our plan to the Department of Education for these remote learning days and have been assured that these days do indeed count toward the 180 days of instruction as mandated annually by the state of Nevada.  Among other things, this plan described mode of instruction, weekly schedule, and the tracking of attendance.
  3. By clicking here you can access a webpage that has current information on all coronavirus communications and updates.
  4. You can check the status of upcoming school events and trips by clicking here.
  5. We continue to keep the school office open with essential personnel each school day from 8 am until 3:30 pm.  A directory of all employees and their email addresses can be found by clicking here.
While we much prefer the energy and synergy that comes with teachers, staff, and students interacting daily on campus, we remain committed to our mission of preparing our students even from a distance.  As often interpreted by Westerners, the Chinese word for  crisis comes from combining two characters – one representing “danger” and one representing “opportunity.”  I am grateful to many who are viewing this crisis as an opportunity – an opportunity to learn, to teach, to grow, to create, to connect, to give, to share, and to model what it means to love our neighbors as ourselves.

May God grant you strength, wisdom, courage, discernment, safety, protection, patience, and grace as we live through these uncertain times.

All my best,

Steven J. Buuck, Ph.D.
Chief Executive Officer

March 16, 2020-Health UPdate

Dear Faith Family,

As you likely heard from Governor Steve Sisolak at his press conference on March 15, 2020, all Nevada K-12 schools are to remain closed until, at minimum, April 6, 2020.  Since our Easter break begins April 6, 2020,  Faith Lutheran students will not return to campus until at least April 14, 2020, the day we are currently scheduled to return from our break.  If that date gets extended, we will let you know once that decision is made.

Online instruction begins Wednesday, March 18, 2020 and will go until at least April 3, 2020.  A video will be sent to all parents and students by tomorrow afternoon with specifics on how this remote learning will work.  For us, online learning is more than just academic progress.  We are putting measures in place to make sure that our students are supported completely through this process.
  1. Our faculty and staff were blessed to begin our day with Dr. Shadaba Asad, the Medical Director for infectious diseases at UMC. She graciously provided an hour for a presentation on this newest coronavirus and Q & A.
  2. The Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association (NIAA) has required that schools are not to compete in games or contests, conduct practices, hold meetings, or allow any school facilities to be used by any NIAA athlete or coach until further notice.  All middle school sports are following that same directive and are postponed until further notice.
  3. All school activities are postponed until further notice including clubs, arts, and student life events.  Beginning March 18, school events that are officially cancelled will be listed on our website.  Rest assured, our campus is safe and clean; we are hoping that the mitigation strategies we are taking at Faith Lutheran will help slow the further spread of this virus.
  4. The Shield Store on campus is closed until students return.
  5. The Thrift Store on Rainbow is currently open.
  6. Beginning Wednesday, March 18, school office hours will be from 8 am until 3:30 pm.
  7. All coronavirus communication and updates can be found by clicking here.
As you talk with your children: remain calm and reassuring; avoid language that might blame others and lead to stigmas; pay attention to what your children see or hear from media outlets and social media outlets; provide information that is honest and accurate; teach them everyday actions to reduce the spread of germs.

One thing is certain; we cannot predict the future.  We are trying to do our part in mitigating the risk to the Faith Family, Las Vegas, Nevada, the United States, and our world.

Until our next correspondence,

Steven J. Buuck, Ph.D.
Chief Executive Officer
