Fail and Flourish: The Williams Research Greenhouse at Faith Lutheran

Posted by Stephen Blank on Jul 3, 2018 3:09:32 PM

“Why are we building a Greenhouse?”  A skeptical 8th grader asks.  The purpose of this greenhouse is bigger than the plants, but rather than getting knee deep in a philosophical discussion about best educational practices with a thirteen year old, I instead reply, “It will have fish...” Based on their reaction, the student is satisfied.

Posted by Dr. Steve Buuck on May 30, 2018 3:00:00 PM

The campus is (relatively) quiet this afternoon.  We just finished our farewell all faculty/staff luncheon where we say “see you later” to those staff members who are not returning next year and to our ten month employees who are not required to be on campus during the summer.

Conquering Death to Give us Life

Posted by Dr. Steve Buuck on Apr 1, 2018 5:00:00 AM

Woody Allen once said, “I'm not afraid of death, I just don’t want to be there when it happens.”  That’s cute and funny, but the reality is… he was afraid of death and it is going to happen – to all of us.  I don’t know about you, but that scares me a bit.  For the huge majority of the people in the world, even us Christians, death can seem scary.  But as Jesus walked the face of the earth, death didn’t scare Him.

GOOD Friday?

Posted by Dr. Steve Buuck on Mar 30, 2018 5:00:00 AM

Good Friday?  What is so good about Good Friday?  Is this an appropriate title for such a day?  In my younger days, I always viewed this as the most depressing day of the year.   Churches are dark, pastors often wear black, fewer candles are lit, people are somber, the music is depressing.  We often leave the sanctuary in silence.  What’s so good about Good Friday?

The Rise of Electronic Vapor Products

Posted by Dan Buikema on Mar 20, 2018 5:35:00 AM

If you are like me, you are baffled by the sudden prevalence of middle school and high school-aged children across the country using electronic vapor products like e-cigarettes, Juuls, vapes or Monq pens.  The trend scares me both as a parent and a school counselor.

As the Director of Social Norms here at Faith Lutheran Middle School & High School, I am passionate about helping our students avoid risky behaviors like drugs, alcohol, tobacco, and sex.  This January we have launched our Faith Facts campaign with renewed vigor to involve the entire Faith Family.  Faith Facts is a major undertaking that is part of a comprehensive ‘Avoid Risky Behaviors’ program.  To summarize the comprehensive approach, I will summarize it in three words ‘Danger, Data, and Divinity”.

Posted by Mai Choy on Feb 6, 2018 5:22:06 PM
